01What does PCNshark do?
PCNshark manages component lifecycle risk end to end. It monitors the change notices your team receives, extracts the affected parts and dates, and matches them against your BOMs; it gives engineering the workflow to decide what happens per affected line; and it helps the team act — evaluating manufacturer-recommended and spec-ranked alternates, reviewing distributor sourcing context, attaching datasheets, and recording the decision on the component so every BOM using it inherits the outcome.
02Is PCNshark a component database?
PCNshark includes an organization-wide component catalog, but it is designed around lifecycle decisions rather than being a generic parts search database. Component records connect BOM usage, lifecycle evidence, PCN impacts, alternate recommendations, sourcing information, datasheets and your team's decision history in one place.
03Does PCNshark replace our PLM or ERP?
No. PCNshark is the lifecycle-risk and component-decision layer that complements a PLM or ERP. Your PLM remains the system of record for formal engineering change; your ERP remains the system of record for purchasing. PCNshark covers the work in between — detecting exposure, running the engineering decision, evaluating alternates and sourcing, and preserving the reasoning at the component level.
04How are alternate parts recommended?
Two ways, kept distinct. Manufacturer-recommended replacements are extracted from the PCN itself. Functional alternates are ranked by specification similarity and shown with a match percentage and the specs that differ. Neither is an approval: PCNshark does not certify an alternate as drop-in compatible, and engineering review is required before qualification. Alternate recommendations are available on Team plans and above.
05Where does sourcing data come from?
From distributor data across approximately 15 distributors, refreshed on demand rather than streamed continuously. Stock, MOQ, price breaks and lead times are shown as estimates, not quotes, with authorized and independent sellers clearly distinguished so counterfeit risk stays visible. Confirm any figure with the distributor before committing to a purchase.
06Can our team set lifecycle status ourselves?
Yes, and that is deliberate. Lifecycle truth reaches component engineers through PCNs, EOL letters, manufacturer and supplier conversations, distributor information and internal knowledge. Your team can set the status manually and attach the evidence behind it. If a later automated signal conflicts with a manual decision, PCNshark flags the conflict for review — human decisions are never silently overwritten.
